CRM197 (Cross Reacting Material 197) is a non-toxic mutant of diphtheria toxin (58 kDa) that has been shown to be safe in animal studies. It is commonly used as a vaccine carrier protein, helping polysaccharide antigens enter antigen-presenting cells and trigger T-cell-dependent immune responses.

 For vaccine or therapeutic applications, chemical conjugation to antigens allows CRM197 to form stable complexes that can serve as carriers for fusion proteins in drug delivery or as a targeted therapy for cancers overexpressing HB-EGF.
